IU football has promoted tight ends coach Nick Sheridan to offensive coordinator following Kalen DeBoer’s departure for the head coaching job at California State University at Fresno.
Sheridan was named one of the nation’s top 30 coaches under 30 years old in 2017 by 247Sports.
Sheridan, 31, will join defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, 32, as the youngest coordinating tandem in the Big Ten.
“Nick is one of the bright, young offensive minds in our game,” IU head coach Tom Allen said in a press release. “I have the absolute confidence that he is prepared to keep the continuity in our offensive system and allow us to build off of the success we had in 2019.”
Allen also announced running backs coach Mike Hart will become an associate head coach, and receivers coach Grant Heard will serve as co-offensive coordinator to Sheridan.
A walk-on quarterback turned scholarship athlete at Michigan from 2006 to 2009, Sheridan got his first college coaching experience as an offensive-minded graduate assistant at Western Kentucky University. He then coached in the same role at University of South Florida and University of Tennessee.
After helping with the development of Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs at Tennessee from 2014 to 2016, Sheridan came to IU to serve as its quarterbacks coach from 2017 to 2018. Under Sheridan, junior quarterback Peyton Ramsey broke single-season school records for completion percentage.
He became tight ends coach last season when DeBoer was made offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. In his one season working with the position, Sheridan helped sophomore Peyton Hendershot set the program record for single-season yards by a tight end.
“Nick was able to excel in so many different roles, not just as a position coach, but managing the game, continuing to push ideas in the game plan,” DeBoer said in a press release. “His teaching style, personality and knowledge of the game make him a perfect fit.”
