Eagles Make Coaching Changes Official, Will Not Have Traditional Offensive Coordinator

Straight from the team, via press release, here are the changes to the coaching staff:

  • Rich Scangarello – Senior Offensive Assistant
  • Press Taylor – Passing Game Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach
  • Matt Burke – Run Game Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach
  • Marquand Manuel – Defensive Backs Coach
  • Aaron Moorehead – Wide Receivers Coach
  • Andrew Breiner – Pass Game Analyst
  • T.J. Paganetti – Assistant Run Game Coordinator/Assistant Running Backs Coach
  • Dino Vasso – Assistant Coordinator/Defense

The biggest takeaway, as I’m sure you’ve been reading about, is that the Eagles will go without a traditional offensive coordinator this year. They will have Scangarello, a former Denver OC, join a game-planning group that now includes a promoted Press Taylor. Doug Pederson continues to call the plays, as he always has, but they get the fresh perspective or “outside voice” in Scangarello, so that box is checked. The optics of solely promoting from within would have been a little bit iffy, especially since they just did that with Mike Groh and Carson Walch, who were both fired.

This is somewhat similar to what I was spitballing a few weeks back, the idea of just doing a collaborative thing below an offensive-minded head coach. The setup the Birds are rolling with is similar to what the 49ers have, which is pass and run game coordinators underneath Kyle Shanahan. If your OC isn’t calling plays anyway, then you can just build a game-planning group with individual responsibilities for a specific personnel group.

You see this in college with head coaches who call plays. Dana Holgorsen, who left WVU for Houston last year, has a setup that looks like this:

He’s got co-offensive coordinators who handle the QBs and offensive line, then individual position coaches below him.

I’ll leave you with the Scangarello blurb written in the Birds’ press release:

Rich Scangarello joins the Eagles coaching staff as a senior offensive assistant after spending the 2019 season as the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos. Scangarello brings 17 years of collegiate coaching experience and six years of NFL coaching experience to Philadelphia.

Prior to his time with the Broncos, Scangarello spent two seasons (2017-18) as the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers. In addition to his stints with Denver and San Francisco, Scangarello served as an offensive quality control/assistant quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2009 and an offensive assistant for the Atlanta Falcons in 2015.

Scangarello began his collegiate coaching career in 1998 as a graduate assistant at UC-Davis. He went on to work as a grad assistant at Idaho in 2000 before becoming the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Carleton College. Scangarello returned to Idaho to serve as the quarterbacks coach from 2002-03 before he began a five-year tenure at UC-Davis, first working as the team’s passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach from 2004-07 and then as the co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach in 2008.

In addition to his early college coaching positions, Scangarello has also coached at Millsaps College (2010-11), Northern Arizona University (2012-14) and Wagner College (2016).
