OFFENSE: PC 187(a) – Murder

DATE: November 26, 2018

DATE OF INCIDENT: November 14, 2018

VICTIM: Patrick Smith

SUSPECT(S): Leslie Ray Hawkins, 18-Year-Old, Barstow Resident,
Height: 5’8”-5’9” Weight: 130–150 Lbs.

SUMMARY:

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at approximately 6:50 P.M., Barstow Police officers responded to a call regarding a burglary in progress at a residence in the 800 block of Keith Street.

As officers arrived at the scene and approached the residence, they observed two (2) male subjects flee from the rear of the residence. The suspects ran south towards the rear of the residences on Linda Lane as the officers pursued them.
As officers were searching the area for the suspects, one of the residents in the area called her neighbor, Patrick Smith, and requested that he check her backyard believing she heard noises outside. Smith walked to the side of the residence where one of the burglary suspects shot him multiple times.

Barstow Police detectives identified the shooting suspect as Leslie Hawkins, an 18-year-old male adult from Barstow. Officers, detectives, and deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department searched the scene for Hawkins but were unable to locate him. Detectives issued a probable cause declaration for the arrest of Leslie Hawkins for the charge of PC 664/187(a) – Attempted Murder.

On November 21, 2018, detectives submitted the case to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office. After reviewing the case, the District Attorney’s Office filed charges on Leslie Hawkins for the crime of PC 664/187(a) – Attempted Murder, and issued a warrant for his arrest.

On November 22, 2018, Patrick Smith succumbed to his injuries and passed away at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.

On November 26, 2018, Detective Tom Lewis met with members of the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office to request amending the charges against Hawkins to PC 187(a) – Murder. The District Attorney’s Office amended the charges and issued a warrant for Leslie Hawkins for the crime of PC 187(a) – Murder.
